"On the 7th of December 1941, my father was on a Dutch freighter in the Straights of Malacca when a Japanese destroyer came over the horizon. The freighter high-tailed it into Australian waters and was safe. My dad then signed on to serve in America's Merchant Marine and spent the rest of the war doing convoy duty in the North Atlantic, where the life expectancy of the sailors Coast Guard, Navy and Merchant Marine was estimated by the Department of the Navy to be two weeks. My dad earned his US citizenship the hard way and later kept on to serve as a Merchant Sailor in both the Korean and Vietnamese Wars.

My second child, as a US marine and a member of the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance, helped spearhead the drive into Baghdad. It ws his unit that tore down the statue of Saddam, and provided perimeter security for the Navy and Army Special Operators to rescue Jessica Lynch and the other American's of the Arizona National Guard that were being held captive. For the next 14 years, he would be between Iraq and Afghanistan as a Marine and contractor.

My own time serving in the Marine Corps was uneventful. Being as close as I was to those who had put their asses on the line and spilt their blood in the jungles gave me a special perspective on those who serve. Plus, having grown up in a Brooklyn neighborhood where that abounded with the sons and daughters of cops and firemen, who later themselves grew up to be cops, firemen and paramedics; knowing of their stresses and health concerns, I thought it appropriate that we do what we can for those who serve us at home and abroad, those who put their asses and their blood on the line for the rest of us. It's our small way to say "Thanks" to the men and women who rarely get thanked for the special jobs they do."
